1989 Mercury Tracer?

My belts are tight, but they do show dry rot How do I change the Alternator %26amp; Power Steering belts on a 1989 Mercury Tracer. Nobody will touch it %26amp; to take it to a shop they want $250.00 just to change the belts. (my cost $15.00 for the belts). Also, the Alternator needs to be changed- any tips on how to do that?

Thanks.1989 Mercury Tracer?Your best bet would be to get the Haynes manual for your car... it would be tough to give you step by step directions on here. You can get the manual at most any auto parts store... $15, and now you'll have it for any future projects.

- Good Luck!1989 Mercury Tracer?I had one of those it sucked!!!1989 Mercury Tracer?Unless you have a good set of wrenches as well as a 1/2 inch drive socket set with the right sizes to fit the nuts and bolts, you can't do the job yourself. You will also need someone to lever the pump and alternator and hold it tight while you tighten the bolts. The job can be dangerous if you don't disconnect the battery properly and if it's required to get under a jacked up vehicle at any time. To get an idea of the cook book steps that would need to be followed for your car, go to the public library and read the Motors and Chilton's manuals for the repair. Also buy a http://www.haynes.com manual for your car.
